Introduction to Computing (Tietotekniikkataidot)

The course introduces students to basic IT skills essential for study and work life via practical exercises. The exercises are divided into three themes. The first theme deals with data management and the University’s IT services, the second theme with spreadsheets and data visualizing, and the third with text processing and online publishing.

Most of the exercises are done with Microsoft’s Office365 tools. All the programs required for the course are installed in the University computers located in computer labs. You can, however, use your own computer during the course. Operating systems macOS and Linux can be used as well. As a University student you can install Office365 on your computer for free.

Lecture attendance is not mandatory after the opening lecture. This means you can complete the course almost entirely by distance learning. Contact instruction is offered weekly in the form of lectures, step-by-step instructing, and computer lab support. The course aims to support especially those students who feel uncomfortable with information technology.

The course is worth 3 ECTS and is evaluated on a scale of pass/fail. The course is held at least twice during the academic year – in the first period (I) in the autumn and in the fourth period (IV) in the spring. The exact completion requirements will be explained in each course’s opening lecture.
